The Creative Thread: Mending, Making and Moving Forward

There is something deeply human about the act of creating. Long before we painted on canvas or set gemstones into gold, we shaped our stories in ochre across cave walls, danced around fires, and stitched together garments with care and intention. Creativity isn’t just a means of survival. It’s how we make sense of the world. It’s how we connect, communicate, and celebrate being alive. We’re the only living beings that create for the pure joy if it - we need it, crave it, and in today’s ever-evolving digital world, it’s somewhat of a sacred practice that I fear humans may be losing, and it’s needed now more than ever.

Taming the Dragon

It saddens me when friends tell me they aren’t creative. Creation isn’t limited to paintbrushes or pottery wheels. It lives in movement, in melody, in language and texture. It pulses through music, sculpture, architecture, food, poetry, dance - and yes, in jewellery too. It exists wherever intention meets expression. You don’t have to be “an artist” to be creative. The way you cook a meal, write a caption, rearrange your living room, or comfort a friend - these are all acts of creative spirit.

For me, creativity has always been more than a hobby - it’s a lifeline. I’ve never quite felt like I fit the mould, and there have been long chapters in my life when the weight of that dissonance has felt unbearably heavy - I still battle with this feeling every day. There’s a dragon in me that rears its head when I feel caged in, made to conform to the ‘norm’ and behave in a way that’s deemed ‘appropriate’ or ‘corporate-professional’. Mental health can be a quiet and persistent fog. But in creativity, I find clarity - the dragon rests. In making, I find meaning.

Jewellery is one of my love languages, but it isn’t the only one. Writing, styling, playing with materials, dreaming up visuals - these are all part of the way I move through the world. When I don’t create, I feel stifled, disconnected from myself. But when I follow the thread - wherever it leads - I feel whole again.

Making’s Many Forms

Some people find their flow in rhythm and repetition: the heartbeat of dance, the rise and fall of a song, the steady glide of knitting needles. Others lose themselves in colour and texture—in paint, clay, textiles, flowers, or film. Some use words to build worlds, writing poems or journaling thoughts that might never be spoken aloud. Creativity can be found in a well-edited video, a carefully plated meal, a handmade zine, or a quiet walk where an idea takes root.

Each form of creativity offers a different kind of medicine. Dance invites release. Writing encourages reflection. Painting asks you to see things anew. And making something with your hands - something tangible you can hold or wear - offers a grounding kind of magic. There’s a reason we return to these practices again and again. They help us process, play, connect, express and heal.

You don’t need to be “good” at it. The purpose isn’t perfection - it’s presence. Creativity is about tuning in, not performing. It’s about honouring that little spark of inspiration and giving it room to breathe.

You Were Made to Make

So often we forget that we are all makers at heart. Whether or not you consider yourself “creative,” there is something inside you that longs to express, to explore, to shape the world in some small way. Maybe it’s been quiet for a while. Maybe life got loud. But it’s still there.

You don’t need a studio, a plan, or anyone’s permission. You just need a spark - and the courage to follow it. That might look like dancing in your kitchen, doodling in the margins, scribbling a note to yourself, or collecting wildflowers on a walk. It all counts. It all matters.

So take a moment. Breathe. And ask yourself with these journal prompts:

Where do I feel most alive?
What lights me up inside?
When was the last time I made something—just for me?

Your creativity doesn’t need to be big or polished. It just needs to be yours.

Let this be your reminder: you were made to make. So make.

Keep shining,
